US President Donald Trump said he “had to” go to war in Iran despite a claim from Vice President JD Vance that doing so caused a blue wave of Democratic candidates to oust Republicans from coast to coast in the previous day’s midterm elections.
Voters gave Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, delivering a decisive rebuke to Trump.
Trump on Wednesday ruled out firing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth despite suffering bruising midterm elections losses that the US president has blamed on the war against Iran.
“No, I think he’s doing a very good job,” Trump said when asked if he was considering replacing Hegseth, a staunch proponent of military action against the Islamic republic.
