Egypt’s Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem on Saturday described the launch of the first locally assembled electric vehicle (EV) at the El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, as a major milestone in localising the automotive industry in Egypt.
Forty-five per cent of the components in the new locally manufactured car are sourced locally.
Hashem emphasised that the state’s objective is to build an integrated industrial base for electric vehicles, deepen domestic manufacturing, and capitalise on the rapid global transition towards electric mobility and advanced technologies.
The minister made these remarks during a press conference announcing the launch of the “Dongfeng Aeolus” (Aeolus E70/Mige) model, produced at El Nasr Automotive facilities in collaboration with SN Automotive and Chinese firm Dongfeng.
He highlighted that the coming phase will focus on developing technological capabilities and increasing the participation of Egyptian companies in automotive supply chains.
Egypt’s Automotive Industry Development Programme (AIDP) provides incentives tied to local value addition, investment expansion, and environmental standards.
Minister Hashem added that partnerships with private and international corporations, such as Dongfeng, are essential for transferring expertise, reducing the import bill, creating high-quality jobs, and boosting export potential to regional and global markets.
For his part, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat stated that the commencement of actual electric vehicle production in Egypt marks a significant step in the transition towards sustainable transport.
He noted that rapid global developments in the EV sector underscore the necessity of expanding domestic manufacturing.
