CAIRO — Egypt’s wushu kung fu team had plenty to celebrate in Tunisia. They returned home as Arab champions with 55 medals, including 51 golds and four silvers, as well as three first-place trophies. Hosts Tunisia and Algeria finished behind them.

Ten Arab countries competed in the championships. The programme included the seventh Arab national team competitions in sanda and taolu (forms), alongside the first national team competition in duan bing. Club events across several age groups also took place.

Egypt made its mark across all three disciplines. Sanda put athletes’ speed, reactions and fighting skills to the test. Taolu demanded sharp technique, balance and control.

Duan bing brought a new challenge. Arab national teams competed in the discipline for the first time, giving participants a chance to test their themselves against regional rivals and gain experience.

The medal count told its own story. Egypt had strength across the disciplines, with plenty of talent to draw on. Yet the wider value of the championships went beyond the podium.

Egypt sent 70 athletes from seven clubs to compete in Tunisia. The aim was about more than medals. They faced new opponents and dealt with the pressure of competition. That sort of experience can be hard to match in training.

It also gives coaches a better idea of how their athletes measure up against regional opposition. For younger competitors, in particular, these events can be an important step towards higher-level competition.

Egypt’s next generation will need that exposure. Established athletes can lead the way, but a strong national team also needs fresh talent ready to take their place. The clubs have a big part to play in making that happen.
