Over 400 million people across Africa live below the extreme poverty line. This is a sobering human and economic paradox for a continent so richly endowed with gold, oil, diamonds, and vast agricultural potential, yet where over 40% of the population faces daily struggles for survival.

Poverty here is rarely just a question of income. It is a structural crisis defined by the absence of fundamental human needs: functional schools, accessible healthcare, clean water, adequate food, and basic human dignity.

In several countries, families living on less than a dollar a day contend with severe infrastructure deficits, persistent droughts, unmanaged chronic illnesses, and localized conflicts.

Decades of historical exploitation, resource mismanagement, and governance failures have siphoned wealth away from local communities, leaving many nations near the bottom of global rankings for per capita income and economic resilience.

Addressing this reality requires moving past diagnostic rhetoric and executing clear, structural solutions. At the core of this effort is a growing recognition that Africa cannot overcome poverty without fixing its food and water systems.

To bridge the gap between policy and practice, the African Union is transitioning from the legacy CAADP Malabo Declaration to the newly adopted CAADP Kampala Declaration.

Central to this shift is the Agrifood Systems Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2035), designed to turn continental commitments into targeted investments, local infrastructure, and cross-border partnerships.

Complementing this strategy, the African Union designated its 2026 Theme of the Year around Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063. Water sits at the vital intersection of public health, food security, climate resilience, and economic development.

Without reliable water management, crop yields fall, livestock production declines, and climate shocks like droughts and floods compound community vulnerability.

These twin priorities will anchor the 17th Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security (ADFNS), taking place from October 29–30, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya. Co-convened by the African Union Commission (AUC-DARBE), the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), and the Government of Kenya, the summit will centre on the theme: “Harnessing Sustainable Water for Resilient Agrifood Systems, Nutrition Security and Inclusive Prosperity in Africa.”

First declared by AU heads of state at the 2010 Kampala Summit under the guiding principle that “Africa must feed itself,” the ADFNS was launched in Lilongwe, Malawi, later that year.

Over the past decade and a half, it has served as a primary platform for political dialogue, policy alignment, and resource mobilization across the continent.

As leaders gather in Nairobi, the message is straightforward: water scarcity, land degradation, and shifting climate patterns directly threaten the productivity of agrifood systems from farming and aquaculture to processing and sanitation.

While policy frameworks and strategic roadmaps provide an essential blueprint, lifting 400 million people out of poverty will ultimately depend on sustained political commitment and concrete action on the ground.
