Egypt has planted around 12 million trees nationwide under the presidential ‘100 Million Trees’ initiative. Work is under way to expand green spaces, protect existing trees and convert former waste dumps into public parks.
Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said the government was supporting community-led tree-planting initiatives. The move is aimed to improve air quality, enhance the urban environment and provide more green spaces for residents.
The ministry is co-ordinating with the Armed Forces Engineering Authority and the Ministry of Housing to turn the El-Wafaa wal-Amal and El-Obour sites into public parks. The sites cover a combined area of more than 400 feddans, the ministry’s press release said on Wednesday.
The project aims to repurpose areas previously used as informal waste dumps, transforming them into open green spaces that serve surrounding communities and help increase the amount of greenery in urban areas.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to improve environmental conditions, expand access to public parks and enhance quality of life across the governorates.
