Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and President and CEO of Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Toshimitsu Imai, held discussions at the government’s quarters in the New Capital on Monday evening.

Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Fumio Iwai, and Richard Bielle, CEO for Africa Division, CEO for Africa Region at Toyota Tsusho.

As the meeting started, Madbouly stressed that Egypt and Japan enjoy longstanding and strong friendship ties, referring to mutual interest in further boosting bilateral co-operation, noting that it was his second meeting with a delegation from Toyota Tsusho, according to a press release on the Cabinet Faceboo page on Tuesday.

The meeting aimed to review the group’s operations and activities in Egypt, particularly in the automotive and clean and renewable energy sectors, Madbouly said.

These sectors are among the Egyptian Government’s priorities and are of particular importance to the Egyptian market, expressing the Government’s aspiration for the group to expand its presence and investments in Egypt, he added.

For his part, Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem said the Egyptian market was experiencing significant development, with promising and growing opportunities offered.

The minister highlighted Egypt’s strong export potential, citing the country’s free trade agreements, strategic location, access to international markets and advanced infrastructure.

The Japanese Ambassador Fumio Iwai thanked the Prime Minister for the meeting and expressed his appreciation for the discussions, and stressed that the Egyptian market offered numerous opportunities that the group was keen to explore.

During the meeting, Toyota Tsusho’s Chief, Toshimitsu Imai voiced appreciation for the Egyptian government’s efforts and its ability to maintain stability, as well as the country’s strong economic performance despite a turbulent regional environment.

He added that  the group has a significant presence in the Egyptian market across several key sectors, including automotive and green infrastructure.

He said the group operates in Egypt’s automotive sector through the Toyota and Lexus brands via Toyota Egypt.

Sales reached around 9,600 vehicles in 2025, while Toyota Fortuner vehicles have been assembled locally since 2012. The company also plans to assemble a new Toyota vehicle model in Egypt in the coming period.

Imai said the group is also involved in developing Egypt’s infrastructure and renewable energy sectors, with investments including thermal power generation projects with a combined capacity of 6,262 megawatts and total investments of around $2.4 billion. He also highlighted the group’s projects in the wind energy sector.

In transport and logistics, he noted that Toyota Tsusho is part of an international consortium operating the vehicle terminal at East Port Said Port (SCAT), Egypt’s first specialised Ro-Ro vehicle terminal. The facility began operations in July 2025 and has an annual handling capacity of up to 500,000 vehicles.
