For thousands of years, the Nile and the Yellow River have nourished two of the world’s great civilisations. Their waters sustained cities, carried knowledge across generations, and connected people to the land and to one another. Though thousands of kilometers apart, they tell a similar story: civilisations endure by adapting, connecting, and looking ahead.

In 2026, their stories meet again. As China and Egypt celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations, the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Cairo offers a moment to reflect on a pioneering friendship and look toward its next chapter.

Seventy years ago, Egypt became the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.

In 2024, it became the first Arab country to include the goal of building a community with a shared future for the new era with China in a joint bilateral statement.

From that first diplomatic connection, the relationship has grown into a partnership reaching far beyond politics.

Two visions, moving in one direction

Like the Nile and the Yellow River, China and Egypt have followed their own paths while nurturing their civilisations. Today, those paths are drawing closer.

China’s Belt and Road Initiative is closely linked with Egypt’s Vision 2030, while China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and Egypt’s Vision 2030 share the same 2030 horizon.

The connection is increasingly visible, in factories, railways, technology, and renewable energy.

Where the desert meets new possibilities

Along the Red Sea coast, the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone tells a story of remarkable transformation. Where there was once open desert, factories, workers, and supply chains now form a growing industrial community.

By June 30, 2026, more than 200 enterprises had established operations there, bringing over US$4.7 billion in investment, generating more than US$7.3 billion in sales, and creating over 10,000 jobs.

The transformation reaches beyond the zone. The 385.8-meter Iconic Tower, Africa’s tallest building, now rises above the New Capital, while the 10th of Ramadan LRT — a flagship China-Egypt infrastructure project — is connecting Cairo to the new cities and industrial zones to the east.

In Naga Hammadi, 570 kilometres south of Cairo, the US$600 million Obelisk solar project has turned 20 square kilometers of desert into Africa’s largest solar farm, with 1.1 GW of solar capacity and a 200-MWh battery storage system.

Chinese technology helps the project withstand Egypt’s scorching sun, while robots automatically clean the panels. Where the Nile once made the desert bloom, the sun is now powering Egypt’s future.

From the stars to Saqqara

The partnership reaches both into the future and deep into history.

The launch of Egypt’s MISRSAT-2 satellite in December 2023 marked a milestone in space cooperation and helped establish Egypt as the first African country with complete satellite assembly, integration, and testing capabilities.

At Luxor, Chinese and Egyptian archaeologists using micro-scanning, multi spectral imaging, and 3D reconstruction discovered two sacred lakes in January 2026. It was the first such find in Egyptian archaeological history and added new pieces to the story of ancient Egypt.

One collaboration reaches towards the stars; another reaches into the sands of time. Together, they show two ancient civilisations meeting through modern science.

The river of friendship

Yet the deepest connection is between people. Through the Egyptian Lu Ban Workshops, young people are gaining practical skills, while Chinese-language programs, academic cooperation, and youth exchanges are creating new opportunities tolearn and build friendships.

With 2026 marking the China-Africa Cultural Exchange Year, these connections are gaining fresh momentum.

The Nileand the Yellow River have carried the memories of civilisations for millennia. Today, they offer a fitting image for China-Egypt relations: two ancient currents finding new ways to meet.

From the Nile to Yellow River, from the Suez desert to outer space, China and Egypt are writing a new chapter in the dialogue between civilisations.

Seventy years ago, diplomacy opened the way. Today, friendship, innovation, culture, and the energy of young people are carrying it forward, towards a shared future for China and Egypt as well as a more connected Global South.
