Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Tuesday that a memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad was a decisive step towards reducing tensions and restoring peace in the region.
Speaking at a summit of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, Sharif said the memorandum represented “the most viable and sustainable path” towards lasting peace.
Pakistan remained committed to resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law and to upholding the principles of the United Nations and the SCO charter, he said.
Sharif also highlighted the conflict’s impact on the global economy, saying Pakistan had “paid a heavy economic cost”.
“In these difficult times, Pakistan has consistently acted as an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator,” he said, adding that Islamabad’s efforts had led to the memorandum, which he described as a “decisive step towards de-escalation in the region and the restoration of peace.”
