Doctors at Zagazig University Hospitals have successfully removed a tumour weighing around three kilogrammes from the chest cavity of a six-year-old girl who weighs 16 kilogrammes, the university said.
The operation was performed by the hospital’s thoracic surgery unit, part of the Faculty of Medicine’s cardiothoracic surgery department.
The university described the procedure as a complex operation reflecting the expertise of its medical teams and the facilities available at its teaching hospitals.
The surgical team was led by Ehab Sobhy, head of the cardiothoracic surgery department, and Abdullah Badr, head of the thoracic surgery unit. Other surgeons, residents, anaesthetists, nurses and medical equipment specialists also took part in the operation.
Zagazig University said the success highlighted its role in providing specialised surgical care to residents of Sharqia province and the wider Nile Delta region.
