Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Swailem has stressed the need for a comprehensive assessment of Egypt’s water-lifting station network and improved operational efficiency through a strategic plan to guide the management and development of pumping stations nationwide.
The plan will enable decision-makers to set priorities for the rehabilitation, replacement and maintenance of lifting stations based on clear and objective technical criteria, Swailem said.
The minister received a report from Ismail Abdel Baqi, head of the Mechanical and Electrical Department, on the progress of construction works at the Al-Nasr 5 Pumping Station in Beheira governorate.
The station, which will serve around 170,000 feddans, is now 65 per cent complete, with trial operations scheduled to begin on May 1, 2027.
Swailem directed that construction proceed in line with the approved timetable, stressing the importance of maintaining implementation rates to ensure the station is completed and operational on schedule.
He also ordered the continued implementation of nationwide maintenance, replacement and rehabilitation programmes for pumping stations by the Mechanical and Electrical Department, in coordination with other ministry agencies.
The measures are aimed at maintaining the efficiency and reliability of Egypt’s water management and distribution system and ensuring sufficient capacity to meet the water needs of all beneficiaries throughout the summer season.
The Mechanical and Electrical Department is a key arm of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, with a central role in operating and maintaining the country’s pumping infrastructure and supporting the efficient management and distribution of water resources.
The department oversees 598 pumping stations equipped with 2,250 pumping units, in addition to three major agricultural drainage-water treatment plants: New Delta, Bahr El-Baqar and Al-Mahsama.
