The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy is closely monitoring progress by Emirati company K&K towards completing the final studies for an electricity interconnection project linking Egypt with Europe via Italy, paving the way for its implementation.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met K&K Chairman Tag el-Din Moustafa Seif at the ministry’s headquarters in El Alamein on Thursday to review developments in the project, which will use submarine cables to support the export of clean energy to European markets. The meeting was also attended by the ministry’s legal adviser, Counsellor Amgad Saeed.

K&K is nearing completion of the project’s final technical, environmental and financial studies under a co-operation and partnership agreement signed with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.

The meeting addressed implementation procedures, proposed routes for the submarine cables, the timetable for completing the 3,000MW project, and the steps required to launch implementation under the National Energy Strategy.

Esmat said the project forms part of Egypt’s strategic drive to expand electricity interconnections and integrate with neighbouring power grids, strengthening the country’s role as a regional energy hub and a bridge for electricity exchange between Africa, Asia and Europe.

He stressed the importance of maximising the use of Egypt’s renewable energy resources, increasing their contribution to the electricity mix, reducing carbon emissions and diversifying energy sources while cutting reliance on fossil fuels.

Esmat also highlighted the private sector’s role as a key partner in developing renewable energy, noting that the project reflects growing international confidence in Egypt’s technical and human capabilities and its attractive investment environment.
