An informed Egyptian source on Monday denied Italian media reports that Egypt was being considered as a possible location for centres to receive migrants outside the European Union (EU).
“There are no such centres in Egypt, and no arrangements of this kind have been proposed,” the source said, dismissing the reports as baseless.
Egypt’s position on migration is based on a comprehensive and consistent approach focused on addressing the root causes of irregular migration rather than establishing centres to receive migrants, the source added, according to MENA.
Egypt and the EU support a balanced, comprehensive approach to irregular migration that includes promoting economic development, creating jobs and strengthening the resilience of communities hosting refugees and migrants, the source said.
