Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, reviewed on Saturday the findings of an Egyptian technical delegation tasked with assessing the structural condition of Sudan’s Jebel Aulia Dam and identifying the measures required to rehabilitate damage sustained by the facility in recent years.

The minister received a report prepared by a committee established in accordance with the recommendations of the Permanent Joint Technical Commission for Nile Waters. The report outlined the outcomes of the Egyptian delegation’s visit to Sudan, which focused on evaluating the dam’s structural integrity and identifying the development work required to restore its safe operation.

According to the report, the mission included a series of technical meetings with specialists from Sudan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, as well as joint field inspections of the dam and its associated facilities. The inspections were carried out to assess the extent of the damage and determine priorities for intervention, particularly regarding structures essential to the dam’s safe operation.

The report also set out a proposed technical roadmap for the next phase, identifying urgent maintenance works as a precursor to implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation programme. The plan envisages drawing on specialised expertise from both Egypt and Sudan to carry out the restoration works.

Sewilam directed officials to maintain close technical coordination with the Sudanese side and expedite implementation requirements based on clearly defined priorities. He reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to provide the necessary technical support and expertise, reflecting the longstanding ties between the two countries and the role of the Permanent Joint Technical Commission for Nile Waters in strengthening co-operation and coordination on water infrastructure of mutual interest.
