Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi held a phone call on Thursday with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during which the two leaders discussed regional developments, bilateral ties and the recent drone attack on two vessels at Egypt’s Damietta Port.

According to the Egyptian presidency, Sánchez expressed Spain’s condemnation of the July 29 drone attack and conveyed his country’s solidarity with Egypt.

El Sisi said the relevant authorities are continuing investigations into the incident, warning of the risks posed by escalating regional tensions.

He stressed the need for coordinated efforts by Egypt, Spain, Europe and the wider international community to contain the situation.

The two leaders also reviewed regional developments, with El Sisi outlining Egypt’s efforts to restore stability.

Sánchez praised Cairo’s role and emphasised the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and a greater role for the United Nations in ending the ongoing war.

He also reiterated support for a just settlement of the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution. El Sisi, meanwhile, expressed Egypt’s solidarity with Spain following recent wildfires, offering condolences to the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

He also offered Egypt’s support in addressing the crisis and congratulated Spain on winning the FIFA World Cup.

Sánchez thanked El Sisi for his message of support and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Egyptian-Spanish co-operation across political and economic fields.
