Egypt has welcomed Ireland’s enactment of legislation banning the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, following the completion of the required constitutional and legislative procedures.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallaf on Sunday, Egypt also described the move as an important step reflecting respect for international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
It said the measure underscores rejection of illegal Israeli settlement activities, which violate the rights of the Palestinian people and undermine prospects for achieving a just and lasting peace.
Egypt further renewed its call on the European Union and the wider international community to adopt similar legal and practical measures to ensure they do not contribute, directly or indirectly, to supporting or sustaining illegal settlements.
The statement also reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, stressing that lasting security and stability in the Middle East depend on ending the Israeli occupation and establishing the independent Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
