Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli met with Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, on the sidelines of the ceremony marking the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the second unit of the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority Sherif Helmy, and Russia’s Acting Ambassador to Egypt, Yuri Matveev.

Madbouli welcomed the Rosatom delegation, stressing that the Dabaa project represents a long-standing national aspiration that has been realised through the commitment of Presidents Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Vladimir Putin. He praised the pace of progress and emphasised the importance of continued coordination to ensure the project remains on schedule.

Likhachev reviewed implementation progress, noting that the first unit is scheduled to be connected to Egypt’s national electricity grid in 2028, with the remaining units to follow by 2030.

He also highlighted ongoing cooperation with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, including potential projects for seawater desalination.

Esmat reaffirmed Egypt’s strategy to expand renewable and nuclear energy projects, underscoring their role in supporting seawater desalination initiatives and diversifying the country’s energy mix.

The discussions highlighted Egypt’s commitment to developing a modern nuclear energy sector, strengthening energy security and deepening its strategic partnership with Russia.
