Israel announced on Thursday that it will only withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon after Hezbollah is completely disarmed and demilitarized.
Government spokesman David Mencer emphasized that the Israel Defense Forces will not redeploy until the Iranian-backed group no longer poses a threat to Israel’s northern border, referencing a failed 2024 disarmament agreement as a reason for the strict condition.
The statement came as the two nations wrapped up a three-day round of U.S.-mediated negotiations in Washington.
These direct talks, which began in April under American pressure, have shown signs of progress, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noting that both neighbors are close to reaching a formal commitment of intent. Despite the diplomatic momentum, Israel maintains that protecting its citizens requires ensuring no Hezbollah forces remain near its territory before any troop withdrawal can occur.
