President Abdel Fattah Sisi met on Sunday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat to review progress on projects aimed at strengthening Egypt’s national electricity grid and advancing the country’s clean energy transition.

The meeting examined the implementation status of the second phase of the national power grid reinforcement programme, according to Presidency Spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy.

The phase comprises around 105 projects and provided an update on their progress, Minister Esmat said.

The minister also reviewed plans to connect renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power plants scheduled for completion by 2027, to the national electricity grid.

Sisi stressed the importance of improving the quality and reliability of electricity supply, enhancing the efficiency of conventional fuel use, and ensuring the stability of the national grid. He also underscored the need to adhere strictly to implementation schedules for completing projects and integrating them into the network.

The meeting further reviewed progress on solar power and battery storage projects aimed at raising the share of renewable energy in Egypt’s electricity mix to 45 per cent within the next two years.

Esmat highlighted the commissioning of the first phase of the Obelisk solar power plant, with a capacity of 500 MW, along with a 200 MWh battery storage system that has already been connected to the grid. The second 500 MW phase is expected to come online in the coming weeks.

The minister also presented updates on the Energy Valley project in Minya, one of the world’s largest integrated clean energy developments. The project will feature 1.7 GW of solar generation capacity and 4 GWh of battery storage across sites in Minya, Qena and Alexandria.

During the meeting, Sisi emphasised the importance of expanding energy storage capacity, reducing carbon emissions and localising renewable energy industries as part of Egypt’s broader strategy to accelerate its green transition and strengthen energy security.
