The state has taken a series of proactive measures to support sustainable development and strengthen food security, Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk said.
He told MENA that the government worked on expanding agricultural area by more than 3.5 million feddans through large-scale land reclamation projects despite growing global challenges such as desertification, drought and climate change.
Farouk said wheat procurement in the current season had exceeded 4.3 million metric tons, reaching 86% of the government’s target, as Egypt moves closer to its goal of collecting 5 million tons from local farmers.
He attributed the increase to a package of incentives and support measures for farmers, including a government decision to raise the wheat procurement price to EGP2,500 per ardeb, aiming at boosting deliveries and strengthening strategic grain reserves.
The minister said wheat cultivation reached a record 3.7 million feddans this season, up by 600,000 feddans from a year earlier, underscoring the state’s focus on the crop as a cornerstone of food security.
He added that Egypt’s agricultural exports had surpassed 4.4 million tons since the beginning of the year, reflecting strong performance across a range of export crops.
