Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, has issued a ministerial decree establishing a high-level committee to oversee the organisation of events surrounding the total solar eclipse, which will be visible from Luxor on 2 August 2027.
The committee will be chaired by the Minister himself.
The Ministry stated that this step is part of Egypt’s early preparations to host the exceptional astronomical event.
The committee’s primary focus is to ensure a safe, well-coordinated, and high-quality experience for international tourists and local spectators, while maintaining strict order at key observation sites.
The newly formed committee is tasked with developing and executing the overall organisational and logistical framework for the event.
It will be commissioned to secure essential services and amenities to accommodate the anticipated influx of global visitors.
Egypt’s unique geographical location means it will experience one of the longest durations of totality during the eclipse, estimated at approximately six minutes.
This prime positioning is expected to turn Egypt into the world’s leading destination for astronomical tourism in 2027, allowing the country to maximise both the economic and promotional benefits associated with the rare natural phenomenon.
