CAIRO – Egypt’s Cabinet media center has denied reports about the selling of more than 5,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts at a public auction organized by Sotheby’s Auction House in the US.
In a statement on Saturday, the center said it contacted the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities which dismissed the news as baseless.
The ministry said, according to MENA, the State is keen to preserve all Egyptian artifacts and heritage as well as to intensify efforts to restore all smuggled artifacts.
It added that it constantly follows up all international auctions and websites as well as all seized artifacts at airports and ports to take all legal measures if Egyptian artifacts are found among them.
The center urged all media outlets and social media users to verify the authenticity of news before spreading rumors.
