The 2026 World Junior Weightlifting Championships officially kicked off in Ismailia with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Suez Canal Authority Hall. Featuring traditional music and a vibrant atmosphere, the event welcomed 270 athletes from 54 countries. Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil inaugurated the tournament alongside leaders from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and Major General Nabil El-Sayed Hasaballah, Governor of Ismailia.
Nabil emphasized that hosting this global event reflects the international community’s trust in Egypt’s ability to organize major sports championships.
He noted that the tournament is a clear sign of the state’s support for young athletes and its commitment to investing in the future of sports.
The Minister described the competition as more than just a quest for medals, calling it a bridge for cultural connection and sportsmanship between nations.
International officials praised the high level of preparation and the quality of the facilities provided.
IWF President Mohamed Hassan Jalloud noted that Egypt has become a top destination for world-class sports due to its excellent infrastructure and organizational expertise.
He expects the competition to be fierce, showcasing the next generation of global weightlifting talent.
Local organizers highlighted that this championship is a key step in Egypt’s plan to develop young champions.
Captain Mohamed Abdel-Maksoud, head of the organizing committee and President of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation stated that every effort has been made to ensure a successful event that upholds Egypt’s reputation.
