CAIRO – Egypt is following up with concern the acts of violence taking place in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in Al-Quds (East Jerusalem), warning that provocative acts against Palestinians could fuel more tensions in the holy city, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez expressed Egypt’s condemnation of all attempts aiming at expelling Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah district to change the demographic identity of East Jerusalem.
He stressed that such acts are considered flagrant violations of international law and international legitimacy, calling for providing international protection to the Palestinian people.
He also called for an end to continued demolitions of houses and confiscations of lands in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, warning that such unilateral acts undermine chance of reaching a two-state solution and hoped-for peace in the region.
