Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, on Wednesday presided over a meeting of the Permanent Supreme Committee tasked with monitoring the pharmaceutical market.
The committee was established by a decree from the Prime Minister as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the availability of medicines and maintain price stability for citizens.
The meeting was attended by Head of the Egyptian Drug Authority, Ali el-Ghamrawy, and Chairman of the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Hisham Stait.
Discussions during the meeting reviewed the latest updates on strategic medicine reserves. Abdel Ghaffar confirmed that sufficient and secure stocks of various pharmaceutical products are available, ensuring that citizens’ needs are met without shortages, according to Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar.
The minister stressed that maintaining drug price stability and shielding citizens from additional financial burdens remains a top government priority. He noted that the current pricing system is subject to regular review to strike a balance between ensuring sustainable drug availability and maintaining affordability for patients, the spokesman said.
Participants in the meeting also emphasised the importance of supporting and encouraging local pharmaceutical manufacturing and attracting new investment to expand domestic production capacity. This, they noted, would help increase the availability of affordable alternatives and improve access to modern and innovative medicines under fair pricing frameworks, Spokesman Abdel Ghaffar concluded.
