The General Authority for Veterinary Services (GAVS), affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture, has continued to intensify inspection and monitoring campaigns targeting outlets displaying and selling salted and smoked fish, as well as fish under preparation, across all governorates. The move comes as part of the state’s broader efforts to safeguard public health and ensure food safety.

The campaigns are being carried out in implementation of directives issued by Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk. He called for enhanced oversight and inspection of all animal-origin products, with particular focus on fish. This comes especially in light of the spring season and the Sham El-Nessim celebrations, which typically witness increased consumption of salted and smoked fish.

GAVS Chairman Hamed El-Aknas stated that inspection campaigns conducted by veterinary directorates nationwide over the past week resulted in the seizure of 71 tonnes and 632 kilogrammes of unfit salted and smoked fish. A total of 177 violation reports were filed, with legal action taken against offenders.

He affirmed that the authority will continue to implement intensive inspection campaigns in coordination with relevant bodies, particularly by tightening market oversight to detect and address any food safety violations.
