Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdel-Aati, reaffirmed on Wednesday Egypt’s commitment to advancing comprehensive migration governance and strengthening international partnerships.

During his meeting with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Minister Abdel-Aati expressed appreciation for the strong and longstanding co-operation between the two sides.

The meeting is held on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of leading African countries implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, hosted by Egypt on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Abdel-Aati underlined Egypt’s aspiration to further develop this partnership in a manner that supports sustainable development and aligns with both the Global Compact for Migration and Egypt’s National Migration Management Framework.

He emphasised the importance of shaping the IOM’s priorities in consultation with developing countries, which bear a significant share of migration-related responsibilities.

He highlighted Egypt’s preparations to participate in the upcoming International Migration Review Forum in New York, where it will present its second Voluntary National Review, noting that Egypt has adopted a balanced approach integrating humanitarian and developmental dimensions in addressing migration challenges, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallf said in a statement.

He added that Minister Abdel-Aati stressed the need for sustained international support that extends beyond short-term programmes to include long-term, structural funding aimed at enhancing national capacities, improving service delivery to migrants, and strengthening the resilience of host communities.

He outlined Egypt’s comprehensive approach to migration management, which links migration to development by addressing root causes such as poverty, unemployment and limited opportunities, while promoting education, vocational training and legal labour mobility pathways.

This approach also includes strengthening border management and combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks.

The minister further underscored that expanding legal migration channels, particularly for labour, remains central to Egypt’s strategy, with ongoing co-operation with international partners to enhance training and facilitate employment opportunities abroad while safeguarding migrants’ rights.

He also reviewed Egypt’s humanitarian role in supporting Gaza, stressing the importance of coordinated efforts with international partners to meet urgent needs while rejecting any measures leading to forced displacement.

For her part, Ms Pope commended Egypt’s pivotal role in migration governance and reaffirmed the IOM’s commitment to deepening co-operation in the period ahead.
