Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdel-Aati held a phone call on Wednesday with US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos as part of the ongoing coordination between Egypt and the United States on key regional issues, including developments in Sudan, Libya, the Great Lakes Region, Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the Horn of Africa, in addition to Egypt’s water security.

The two sides discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East, with Minister Abdel-Aati stressing the need for intensified regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and prioritise political and diplomatic solutions to prevent a broader conflict.

Regarding Sudan, Abdel-Aati reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to undermine the country’s unity or territorial integrity, calling for a humanitarian ceasefire and support for Sudan’s national institutions.

He also stressed the importance of expanding international humanitarian assistance and facilitating the delivery of aid across the country.

On Libya, the Minister Abdel-Aati reiterated Cairo’s position supporting the preservation of Libya’s unity and stability, the unification of its institutions, and progress toward a comprehensive Libyan-led political settlement leading to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

The call also addressed developments in the Horn of Africa. In this respect, Minister Abdel-Aati stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, rejecting any recognition of the self-declared Somaliland as a violation of international law.

The two officials also discussed the situation in the DRC. Minister Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Egypt’s support for efforts aimed at promoting peace and reconciliation. He also highlighted the importance of the Nile River for Egypt, rejecting any unilateral measures affecting the transboundary river.

For his part, the US Advisor Boulos praised Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa.

He also affirmed Washington’s commitment to continued coordination with Cairo on regional and international issues.
