Egypt has joined the External Evaluation Association council of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua EEA), the first time.

Head of the Egypt’s General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR), Ahmed Taha, was appointed in the international body.

ISQua EEA announced Taha’s selection during a meeting of the council held in Dublin, marking Egypt’s first representation in the advisory body that is concerned with global healthcare quality and accreditation systems.

The council includes senior representatives from accreditation and healthcare quality institutions in several countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, China, Japan, Brazil and Britain, as well as international experts in quality management, patient safety and healthcare accreditation.

Taha’s appointment reflects international recognition of Egypt’s efforts to develop healthcare quality systems and the progress made by GAHAR in establishing and implementing national accreditation standards aligned with international best practices, the authority said in a statement.

Taha said Egypt’s participation in the council would help strengthen the country’s presence in international decision-making circles related to healthcare quality and provide opportunities to exchange expertise with leading accreditation bodies and healthcare institutions worldwide.

He added that the Egyptian experience in accrediting healthcare facilities had drawn growing international interest and recognition.

ISQua is one of the leading global organisationsworking to improve quality and accreditation systems in healthcare. It evaluates and accredits healthcare accreditation bodies and contributes to developing reference frameworks and standards used in quality systems worldwide.

During his visit to Dublin, Taha also met Egypt’s ambassador to Ireland, Mohamed Tharwat Selim, who welcomed the visit and said Egypt’s participation reflected the country’s growing presence in international forums concerned with healthcare quality and accreditation.

The two discussed ways to enhance international co-operation in healthcare quality, accreditation and patient safety, according to the statement.
