Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Ahmed Rostom, met with Elena Panova, the United Nations Resident Co-ordinator in Egypt, to discuss ways to strengthen sustainable development and improve the efficiency of public investment.

The meeting comes as part of the long-standing strategic partnership between Egypt and the United Nations system. Discussions focused on enhancing joint co-operation mechanisms and aligning them with Egypt’s urgent national priorities.

Rostom said the ministry is adopting a proactive approach that focuses on early action and better allocation of resources. He explained that the goal is to transform joint programmes with international partners into practical results that support economic growth.

He also highlighted the importance of investing in advanced technology to monitor the performance of public investment and improve its efficiency. In addition, the ministry is working on developing innovative financing mechanisms to increase investment returns and strengthen the sustainable growth potential of the Egyptian economy.

The minister added that the economic and social development plan for the upcoming fiscal year aims to maximise the benefits of international partnerships.

He stressed the need to align United Nations programmes with major national initiatives, especially the presidential initiative “Decent Life” (Hayah Karima), to ensure development benefits reach the communities most in need.

Rostom also called for relying on accurate data and feedback systems to evaluate the performance of development programmes and ensure the sustainability of their results.

For her part, Panova reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Egypt’s development vision, noting the strong mutual trust that characterises the partnership between the two sides.

She reviewed the main pillars of the Strategic Partnership Framework for 2023–2027, which focuses on supporting investment in human capital and economic empowerment, promoting green growth and addressing climate change challenges, as well as strengthening governance and transparency in institutional performance.

Both sides agreed to intensify technical coordination in the coming weeks and organise joint workshops to review performance indicators of the current co-operation framework and prepare for the next phase of partnership, aiming to translate strategic goals into projects with broad social and economic impact.
