As we celebrate the 66th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan, this occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on the dynamic partnership between Japan and Egypt and to highlight recent developments shaping our shared future.

Expanding bilateral co-operation

Historically, Japan’s modernisation since the Meiji era was driven by the energy and vision of youth, underpinned by sustained investment in human capital. That same spirit continues to guide Japan today and inspires our co-operation with Egypt — particularly in the field of education.

The year 2025 has marked significant momentum in bilateral relations. Japan’s Minister of Education visited Egypt twice, while Dr. Mohamed Abdel Latif visited Japan three times. There is further momentum this year, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership (EJEP), underscoring the central role education plays in our co-operation.

Our collaboration spans all levels of education. Egypt-Japan Schools offer not only the Japanese-style “Tokkatsu” model, but also expanded curricula in mathematics, music, and programming, supported by Japanese companies.

Building on the success of the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), established in 2010, the launch of EJ-KOSEN last year introduced a five-year Japanese-model technical education program. It equips students with practical, industry-ready skills aligned with market needs.

Beyond education, Japan proudly supported the historic opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Through concessional loans and the training of more than 2,000 Egyptian conservation experts, Japan has contributed to Egypt’s efforts to showcase humanity’s heritage to the world. Welcoming approximately half a million visitors monthly, GEM stands as a symbol of cultural partnership. As a nation with the world’s longest continuous imperial dynasty, Japan is honored to support Egypt’s remarkable cultural legacy and will continue technical cooperation in the years ahead.

At the global level, Japan also celebrates the success of the Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, which attracted 25 million visitors over six months. Looking ahead, Japan will host the Green Expo next year and looks forward to broad international participation.

Regional peace and stability

Japan commends Egypt’s steadfast commitment to promoting peace and stability in a challenging region, in coordination with international partners, foremost among them the United States.

Japan has provided approximately $410 million in humanitarian assistance since October 2023 and continues to support Gaza through three pillars: long-term engagement in governance mechanisms, comprehensive support for Palestinian state-building, and expanded assistance initiatives such as CEAPAD. Ambassador Okubo has been appointed to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction efforts and is assigned to the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC).

Finally, on this special occasion, we extend our deepest appreciation to the Government and people of Egypt for their enduring friendship. May the bonds between our nations continue to grow — anchored in trust and guided by our shared commitment to peace, development, and human dignity.
