The Upper Egypt city of Aswan has been awarded the “Tourism City of the Year 2026” title by the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8).

Aswan won the prestigious award after securing the highest number of votes from member states in a competitive bid against three other cities from Azerbaijan, Iran, and Pakistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Affairs said that Aswan’s selection crowns efforts of the ministries of foreign affairs and tourism and antiquities.

Egypt submitted a comprehensive file supported by promotional materials highlighting the city’s unique tourism potential, the Ministry said.

The award reflects Aswan’s exceptional historical, cultural, and tourism assets, as well as its growing status as a premier destination. The recognition within the D-8 community is expected to bolster tourism traffic to Egypt in general and to Aswan specifically.

Established in 1997, the D-8 Organization serves as a framework for cooperation among its members across various sectors, including tourism. The organization comprises nine countries with a combined population exceeding 1.2 billion people: Egypt, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
