EgyptAir Hospital achieves medical milestone in high-risk surgery

By Mohamed Attia

EgyptAir Hospital has announced the successful completion of a complex, minimally invasive heart procedure on an 81-year-old patient suffering from a life-threatening aortic aneurysm.

The patient presented with a dissected thoracic aortic aneurysm that extended into the pelvic area, a condition made more high-risk by a medical history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and a previous stroke.

To ensure the safest possible outcome, the medical team chose a sophisticated microsurgical approach rather than traditional open surgery, allowing for a faster recovery and reduced physical strain on the elderly patient.

The procedure, known as a transcatheter aortic aneurysm repair (TEVAR), was performed under general anesthesia using the latest medical technology.

Instead of large incisions, the surgical team accessed the arteries through the femoral neck using the ProGlide™ device to securely lock the blood vessels.

Throughout the operation, the team used Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to provide a clear, internal view of the damage.

This allowed the specialists to pinpoint the exact location of the arterial tear and ensure that the corrective stents were placed perfectly within healthy sections of the blood vessel.

During the intervention, two specialised Ankura™ aortic stents were implanted to reinforce the damaged artery.

These were carefully positioned to end just above the mesenteric arteries, a move designed to protect the damaged aorta while ensuring the patient’s upper intestines continued to receive a full blood supply.

Additionally, the team successfully placed a stent to maintain healthy blood flow to the left subclavian artery, which supplies the neck and arm.

The operation was a total success, concluding without any complications thanks to the joint efforts of the vascular surgery, anesthesia, cardiology, catheterization, and intensive care teams.

The patient is currently in stable condition, with medical tests confirming that blood flow is being maintained perfectly to the neck, arm, intestines, and kidneys. This achievement highlights the hospital’s ability to handle complex vascular cases through modern, minimally invasive techniques.
