Arab Cup begins with two 1-0 thrillers in Doha 11 - Egyptian Gazette

The 11th edition of the Arab Cup commenced yesterday in Doha, Qatar, marking the start of the tournament set to run until December 18.

The competition features 16 participating national teams, including a notable presence from Egypt’s side, which is fielding a squad led by coach Helmy Toulan.

The inaugural day of the 2025 Arab Cup delivered immediate drama and unexpected results.

Syria secured a significant 1-0 victory over Tunisia at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, courtesy of a decisive goal from Omar Khribin.

This win represents Syria’s fifth historical victory against the Tunisian national team – a record now balanced with five losses and two draws.

Syria maintains a positive recent record against the “Eagles of Carthage,” having previously defeated them 2-0 during their last encounter, also held in Qatar at the 2021 Arab Cup.

In an even more stunning outcome, Palestine triumphed over the host nation, Qatar, with a 1-0 scoreline at Al Bayt Stadium.

The winning margin came deep into stoppage time, in the 95th minute, via an unfortunate own goal by Qatari defender Sultan Al-Buraik.

Despite the home advantage and passionate crowd support, Qatar, the reigning Asian champions, struggled to find their rhythm.
Led by star player Akram Afif, the Qatari offense proved ineffective against a highly organized and resolute Palestinian defense.

Following the opening day results, Palestine and Syria now share the top position in Group A, each securing a crucial 1-0 win.
These early upsets have immediately intensified the competition, setting the stage for a compelling qualification race.
