Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi affirmed Egypt’s keenness to deepen co-operation with Malaysia’s Petronas, highlighting the company’s longstanding role in Egypt’s natural gas sector and calling on it to expand its investments in exploration given the country’s promising opportunities.

Badawi made the remarks during a meeting on Friday with Abang Yusuf, Vice President of Petronas for LNG Projects, and his accompanying delegation. Discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership in natural gas and maximising the use of Egypt’s extensive infrastructure, particularly in light of Petronas’ partnership with Shell in the West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) fields and the Idku LNG complex.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum, the two sides reviewed joint projects and explored new areas of co-operation aimed at improving energy efficiency, enhancing operational performance, and reducing emissions through better utilisation of existing infrastructure.

The minister praised Petronas’ contribution to Egypt’s gas projects and stressed his aspiration for greater Malaysian investment in exploration and production.

For his part, Yusuf voiced pride in the company’s partnership with Egypt’s petroleum sector, describing it as the cornerstone of Petronas’ work in the Mediterranean. He underscored the company’s confidence in Egypt’s investment climate and its readiness to expand operations.

Both parties agreed to maintain close coordination between their working teams and to pursue opportunities that deliver the best economic and operational outcomes from joint projects and infrastructure.

The Malaysian delegation also invited Badawi to visit Kuala Lumpur to discuss new avenues of co-operation.
