Following a crucial draw with Burkina Faso, Egypt’s national football team is now just one point away from securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match, held on Tuesday at the August 4 Stadium in Ouagadougou, saw the Egyptian team praised for a strong performance that has positioned them on the brink of qualification.

Minister of Youth and Sports Dr Ashraf Sobhi lauded the national team’s players and coaching staff, led by Hossam Hassan, for their determination.
The Minister affirmed that the team’s strong showing in the African qualifiers is a direct result of the players’ resolve and commitment.

“We are one step closer to the World Cup,” said Sobhi. “The efforts of the Egyptian Football Association, led by Engineer Hany Abo Rida, have created a supportive environment that allowed the team to excel. With the backing of Egypt’s leadership, we are confident in achieving our goal.”

He highlighted that this potential qualification would mark the fourth time Egypt has reached the World Cup finals, following appearances in 1934, 1990, and 2018. The Minister noted that securing just one more point would guarantee their place in the 2026 tournament.
Following the match, Sobhi made a series of phone calls to the national team. He checked on the condition of player Omar Marmoush, who sustained an injury during the game, and praised star player and team captain Mohamed Salah for his leadership and performance.

He also reached out to the Egyptian Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Mohamed El-Ghazawy, to thank him for his role in supporting the team’s delegation.

“The national team’s efforts reflect their determination to fulfill the Egyptian people’s aspirations,” Sobhi stated, reaffirming his full support for the team as they close in on World Cup qualification.
Egypt’s next match is against Djibouti on October 6 in Cairo. A win or a draw in this match will qualify them for the World Cup.
