Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Aati on Monday reviewed progress to date in flood protection schemes nationwide.

Abdel Aati said his ministry is implementing major projects to protect Bedouin settlements, tourist facilities, roads, communications, gas, water, electricity and power towers from floods.

Rainwater will be collected in artificial lakes behind barriers near Bedouin communities, providing a sustainable water supply, the minister said.

Abdel-Aati said that work is underway to protect Sinai from torrential rain and flooding in el-Tor, Taba and Ras Sedr.

Around 44 dams and 229 artificial lakes have been established in South Sinai, along with 16 barriers, 15 reservoirs and five solar energy projects at a cost of LE436 million ($27.7 million).

The projects will protect the Al-Muzaina area, the Dahab Road, Nuweiba sea port, Taba and Sharm el-Sheikh.

Ten reservoirs have been built in central Sinai while infrastructure protection schemes have been completed in Assiout, Aswan and Luxor, the minister added.
