MIAMI/ CAIRO – Al-Ahly head coach José Riveiro underlined his team’s ambition as the Red Devils gear up for their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup opener, declaring that progressing beyond the group stage is the club’s immediate objective.

Speaking at a FIFA-organized press conference in Miami, Riveiro expressed pride in leading one of the tournament’s most decorated clubs.

“It’s a privilege to be here representing Al-Ahly — a club with a rich legacy at the Club World Cup,” said the Spanish tactician.

“Our first goal is to reach the Round of 16. We’re preparing with full focus, and the team is determined to make a strong start against Inter Miami,” he emphasized, according to the club’s official website.

The expanded FIFA Club World Cup will take place across the United States from June 14 to July 13, featuring top clubs from around the globe and a reported $1 billion in prize money up for grabs.

Riveiro acknowledged the challenge of competing in a tightly contested group but voiced confidence in his squad’s readiness.

“It’s a tough group, no doubt — but that’s what top-level football is all about. We’re eager to rise to the occasion and deliver a performance that meets our fans’ expectations.”

The media event featured football heavyweights including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Brazilian legend Ronaldinho, and former Argentina international Javier Mascherano, now coaching Inter Miami.

Global expectations

Riveiro, affectionately dubbed “The Professor,” is the second Spaniard to manage Al-Ahly, following Juan Carlos Garrido’s stint from 2014 to 2015.

At 49, the former Orlando Pirates boss is no stranger to big stages and relishes the opportunity to make a mark early in his Al-Ahly tenure.

“Representing a club with fans across the globe is a responsibility we carry proudly,” he said. “We know they expect positive results — and we’re working tirelessly to deliver.”

On facing global icon Lionel Messi in the opening fixture, Riveiro remained grounded:

“Messi is a phenomenal player — arguably the greatest of all time — but we’re preparing to face Inter Miami as a team, not just one individual.”

Preparations underway

The Red Devils wrapped up their final training session ahead of the historic opener, scheduled for 3:00am Cairo local time on June 15.

Riveiro kicked off the session with a tactical briefing, analyzing lessons from their recent 1–1 draw against Mexican side Pachuca — a match in which Trezeguet scored the equalizer on his unofficial return to the club.

“It was a valuable test,” Riveiro noted. “We gained insights, and now our full focus shifts to Inter Miami. We’re working every day to improve and reach peak performance when it matters most.”

Historic moment

FIFA President Gianni Infantino paid tribute to Al-Ahly’s rich legacy, highlighting the significance of the club’s role in the tournament’s curtain-raiser:

“Al-Ahly is the most decorated club in African football and have millions of passionate supporters. Their presence in the opening match of this inaugural edition adds prestige and history to the event.”

Elite clubs and standout players from all six FIFA confederations will battle for global supremacy, with African powerhouses Al-Ahly (Egypt), Espérance (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca among the challengers.

Ready to compete

Al-Ahly captain and veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy echoed the squad’s determination:

“We’re in full focus mode — a closed camp, intense training, and a clear goal. The media spotlight on this game only fuel our hunger. We’re ready.”

Reflecting on his past Club World Cup experience, El-Shennawy emphasized the squad’s collective mindset. “I’m always focused on helping the team succeed. With unity, discipline, and faith, we believe we can make our supporters proud.”

Back in style

Winger Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” made an immediate impact on his return to Al-Ahly, finding the net in a friendly against Pachuca and reaffirming his dedication to the Red Devils’ Club World Cup campaign.

“It felt incredible to wear the Al-Ahly shirt again,” Trezeguet said post-match.

“The Pachuca game was a valuable test that helped us acclimate to the conditions. We’re fully committed to making a strong statement in this tournament.”

As the countdown to their Group A opener against Inter Miami intensifies, the experienced winger rallied the fans behind the team.
