Egypt’s U-20 national team, under coach Osama Nabih, began their 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Egypt with a significant 1-0 victory over South Africa.

Mohamed Abdullah’s lone goal in the 62nd minute propelled Egypt to the top of their group with 3 points, while South Africa sits at the bottom with zero.

Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi delivered a resounding congratulation to Egypt’s U-20 National Team following their compelling victory over South Africa in the opening match of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament hosted by Egypt from April 27th to May 18th, 2025, features 13 of the continent’s most promising teams.

Minister Sobhi expressed profound satisfaction with the national team’s spirited performance and well-earned triumph.

He emphasized that this initial success provides a significant impetus for the team as they embark on their quest to secure the coveted continental title.

“This victory is a powerful statement of intent from our young Pharaohs,” stated Sobhi. “Their determination and skill on the field demonstrate their readiness to compete at the highest level.

This win is a crucial first step on their journey towards becoming champions.”

Sobhi reaffirmed the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive support to the national team, aligning with the state’s overarching strategy to empower sports and youth development.
He conveyed his strong belief in the players’ capabilities and the expertise of the technical staff to achieve further victories and bring joy to Egyptian supporters nationwide.

Furthermore, the Minister passionately urged Egyptian fans to continue their enthusiastic support by attending upcoming matches in large numbers.

He underscored the profound positive impact of a vibrant home crowd on the players’ morale and performance on the pitch.

Egypt was placed in Group A of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, a competitive pool featuring the host nation alongside Zambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Tanzania.

As the host nation, Egypt secured the top spot in Group A, while Senegal, the defending champions, led Group B, and Nigeria, the third-place finishers in the 2023 edition, headed Group C.

The tournament structure sees the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place finishers, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Notably, the top four teams will earn the prestigious opportunity to represent Africa at the U-20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Chile next September.

Matches will be held across three prominent stadiums in Cairo, Ismailia, and Suez.

This edition of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations carries immense significance as the pathway for Africa’s elite young talents to compete on the global stage at the U-20 World Cup.
