RIO DE JANEIRO- Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, expressing their mutual appreciation for the strong ties between Egypt and Singapore and their aspiration for further progress in the future, Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said in a statement following the meeting.
The discussions included advancing economic cooperation, increasing investments, and activating bilateral dialogue mechanisms at various levels.
The meeting also addressed cultural relations, particularly the enhancement of student exchange programs, including scholarships provided by Al-Azhar for Singaporean students and scholarships offered by Singaporean educational and training institutions to Egyptian students.
Wong commended Al-Azhar’s vital role in promoting moderate Islam.
The spokesperson added that the meeting also touched on regional and international developments as Wong listened to Sisi’s perspective on the situation in the Middle East and its political and economic implications on the global stage, as well as ways to restore regional stability.
The prime minister emphasized Egypt’s pivotal role in stabilizing the region and preventing it from sliding into a full-scale war, which would have severe repercussions for regional and international peace and security.
