The House of Representatives (Parliament) is committed to looking at the old rents issue from a comprehensive and balanced perspective, ensuring justice, with no prejudice to any party at the expense of another, House Speaker Hanafi El Gebali during a plenary session on Sunday.
This will be conducted in a manner that promotes social solidarity among people, he added.
Both landlords and tenants will have the opportunity to express their views and positions, el-Gebali was quoted as saying by the MENA news agency.
and that it directed the formation of a joint committee to conduct a comprehensive and thorough analysis of the Supreme Constitutional Court ruling, enabling it to understand and evaluate all aspects related to the issue of old rent.
El-Gebali said that he had given directives to form a joint committee that will be assigned with conducting a comprehensive analysis of the ruling recently issued by the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) regarding the old rental law.
The SCC ruled that the fixed annual rent for residential properties, as stipulated in Law No. 136 of 1981, is unconstitutional.
The ruling stated that the legislature must intervene to achieve balance and prevent landlords from exploiting tenants’ need for housing by imposing exorbitant returns.
