CAIRO – Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit Tuesday condemned in the strongest possible terms passing a law by the Israeli Knesset banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The UN relief and works agency is mandated to provide basic educational and health services for more than 5.5 million Palestinians refugees in its five fields of operations.
“The decision amounts to a ruling confiscating the rights of millions of Palestinians and is the latest in Israel’s ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimise its role,” Spokesman for the AL Secretary General Gamal Roshdi quoted him as saying.
Abul Gheit warned that the decision is a “dangerous precedent” as regards the international escalation.
He called on UN Security Council Member States to confront this dangerous decision.
Abul Gheit raised alarm that humanitarian action in Gaza will cease to exist, if the the UN agency is barred, the spokesman added.
