Sisi, Sheikh Mohamud attend signing of military co-operation protocol
Cairo, Mogadishu to work on establishing stability in Horn of Africa
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received yesterday Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Somalia, who is on an official visit to Egypt for several days.
The two presidents affirmed the long-standing historic ties between Egypt and Somalia, as well as the mutual keenness to bolster them at various levels, and to build on the results of the Somali president’s visit to Egypt last January.
President Sisi reiterated Egypt’s support of the unity and sovereignty of Somalia over its lands, and the rejection of any interference in its internal affairs, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.
The two presidents also welcomed the steps taken by both countries to deepen bilateral co-operation, including the launch of a direct flight between Cairo and Mogadishu and the opening of the Egyptian embassy in the Somali capital. This is in addition to the signing of a military co-operation protocol between the two countries.
The Somali president expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s continuous support for his country over the past decades. He stressed Somalia’s keenness to further strengthen economic, security and political ties with Egypt during the coming period. He also expressed his appreciation for the role played by various Egyptian bodies in building the capacities of Somali cadres in various fields.
The talks also covered several regional and international issues of common interest. Both presidents agreed to intensify coordination over the coming period to establish security and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
At the end of the meeting, the two presidents witnessed the signing ceremony of a military co-operation protocol between the two countries.
