Minister of Islamic Endowments (Wakfs) Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa met on Sunday French Ambassador in Cairo, Marc Baréty, to discuss religious co-operation.

Moderate Islamic thought, the minister said, is at the centre of the work of Islamic institutions in Egypt.

Gomaa said that his ministry works to promote this moderate thought, not only in Egypt, but also around the world.

Minister Gomaa referred to the many publications produced by his ministry to promotecorrect Islamic understanding and moderate teachings of religious Sharia’a.

These publications, he said, are usually translated into different foreign languages.

Gomaa added that his ministry also trains mosque preachers and imams in this thought and sends delegations across the world to preach this understanding.

“Achieving national and human interests is part of our work,” Minister Gomaa said.

He added that religions are all about peace, even as some people try to distort religious interpretations to serve their own agenda.

Gomaa noted that terrorist groups have nothing to do with religions or morals.

“They are a threat to humanity at large,” the minister of Islamic endowments said.

Ambassador Baréty, for his part, highlighted the profound nature of relations between Egypt and France in all fields.

The fight against terrorism and extremism, he said, requires international co-operation and a comprehensive intellectual and cultural confrontation.

The ambassador noted that his country appreciates what he described as the ‘great’ role played by Egypt in confronting terrorism and extremist ideologies.

He praised the efforts made by the Ministry of Islamic Endowments in this regard.

He cited the publications released by the Ministry of Islamic Endowments, describing them as a ‘wonderful’ cultural production.

These publications, the ambassador said, address many issues that need clarification and interpretation.

He added that the same publications correct misconceptions and dismantle extremist thoughts.
