CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam discussed during a meeting Wednesday with ministry staffers work progress regarding a feasibility study on improving water resources management on Ibrahimiya, Bahr Youssef and Al-Qasid Canals, funded by Japan International Co-operation Authority (JICA).

During the meeting, the irrigation minister reviewed the study activities, which included upgrading water management systems on Ibrahimiya and Bahr Youssef canals in Minya, Beni Suef and Fayoum governorates, the Abu Shusha Canal, an offshoot of Ibrahimiya Canal in Beni Suef Governorate and the Arous and Abu Sir canals, offshoots of Bahr Youssef in Fayoum Governorate and Al-Qasid Canal in Gharbia and Kafr El-Sheikh Governorates, by strengthening and rehabilitating the hydraulic facilities on main and subsidiary canals in these areas.

The study also envisages conducting an integrated environmental economic evaluation of the irrigation system in the covered areas.

The study concluded by recommending replacement and rehabilitation of a number of small hydraulic installations in the study areas, as well as expansions in the field of developing irrigation systems and the use of modern irrigation systems in agriculture by encouraging beneficiaries of the newly applied systems, providing devices to measure water behavior, along with equipment required for the maintenance of canals in the study areas to ensure the disinfection of the canals and improve Water distribution process in these areas.

The minister directed the Irrigation Department to promptly take necessary measures to begin implementing the required replacement and rehabilitation work, with a view to improving the water system in the canals of Ibrahimiya, Bahr Youssef and Al-Qasid, with the aim of improving the level of services provided to beneficiaries.
