LONDON – Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has won the Fans’ Footballer of the Year award for 2021.

It means the Egyptian King retains his crown after also winning last year’s inaugural edition.

Salah came out on top following a stunning calendar year, which saw him score 24 goals in 40 English Premier League appearances.

The 29-year-old achieved an incredible 61 per cent of the vote for the national award to finish comfortably ahead of second-placed Declan Rice of West Ham United.

Over 140,000 voters made their pick from the nine-man shortlist of players who have excelled in England’s top-flight in 2021.

After a month-long search, Salah retained his 2020 crown, beating Declan Rice who came second and Bruno Fernandes in third, ffoty2021.mirror.co.uk reported.

Manchester City and Chelsea stars dominated the rest of the best, with Phil Foden, Edouard Mendy, Mason Mount, Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne and Jorginho rounding off the top nine.

A further 11 players who missed out on the shortlist after our initial journalist vote made up the final list of 20.

So far in 2021/22 he has become the highest-scoring African player in Prem history and equalled Jamie Vardy’s record of scoring or assisting in 15 consecutive Prem games.

This season, the Egyptian King has been in a league of his own, with his blank against Tottenham in their 2-2 draw a true rarity. Salah has scored 15 goals for the term; the player closest to him is his team-mate, Diogo Jota, with 10.

Like Harry Kane led both the most goals scored and the most assists category last season, Salah leads the rest of the Premier League individuals for the 2021/22 run; he is now the leading creator with nine assists to his name.
