Year Wrap-up: Cinema industry flourishes in 2021 despite pandemic 11 - Egyptian Gazette

As 2021 is coming to its end, I still think it’s exceptional because it witnessed recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic in the cinema industry.

For the last two years most theatres around the world were closed. This forced most production companies to seek alternative ways to display their films. Global and Arab streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Shahid and WatchIt gained momentum with great turnout of an audience who spent most of their time at home during lockdown.

It was a successful choice at this time, however, even if people enjoyed watching movies at home, still there is an unshakable truth that movies are made for theatres and to enjoy them to the full you should watch them on the silver screen.

Now that the world is beginning to return to normal, the cinema industry has also started to recover after complete paralysis in the box-office globally.

Many international films were released in countries that opened the doors of cinemas, as audiences were eager to attend films in the theatres. Of course, some films produced during the lockdown period were not so good. But, still there are movies that succeeded in becoming blockbusters.

And before the year ends, you may still have time to watch some of the best films that were released during 2021.

One of the best movies this year is No Time To Die, which earned $730 million at the world box office to become the highest grossing movies of the pandemic era.

The movie is the final outing of Daniel Craig as James Bond. Bond has quit active service and is enjoying his life in Jamaica, until his CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) asks him for help in a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist. Bond finds himself fighting a mysterious villain named Lyutsifer Safin, who uses dangerous bioengineering technology.

F9: The Fast Saga comes in the second place at $720 million. The film is the ninth in the Fast and Furious franchise. Directed by Justin Lin, the film tells the story of Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), who is living a quiet life with his wife Letty and his son, but danger lurks just over the peaceful horizon.

In order to save his loved ones, Dom finds he has to confront the sins of his past. If you are a fan of the series, you’ll probably love this latest part.

Another blockbuster is Venom: Let there be Carnage with earnings of $490 million worldwide. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film is a sequel to Venom, in which journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) tries to adapt to his new body hosting the alien symbionts Venom, and for that he faces new opponents.

While some movies did well at the global box office, others fared better online streaming. Finch, produced by AppleTV+ for online streaming is about Finch (Tom Hanks) — the last survivor on earth — who builds a robot to take care of his dog after he dies.

Out of movies we saw in 2021, some were really good and others were not worth mentioning. In 2022, we hope to see better-crafted plots, crisp dialogues and greater entertainment value.
