Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilem, met with Abdel Moneim Belaati, Tunisian Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, on the sidelines of the 6thCairo Water Week.
Sewilam spoke of the similarity of the challenges facing the water sector in Egypt and Tunisia, especially the challenges of climate change, the resulting drought waves, high temperatures, and the increase in water uses, which affect Egypt and a large number of Arab and African countries, requiring strengthening co-operation to improve the water management process.
The Minister of Irrigation invited his Tunisian counterpart to visit the National Water Research Center affiliated with the Ministry, to learn about the centre’s research capabilities.
He stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation and exchanging experiences between the two countries under the umbrella of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in 2015, noting that Egypt launched the AWARe initiative during the last climate conference.
The Tunisian Minister pointed out the many challenges that Tunisia faces as a result of water scarcity resulting from climate change, noting his country’s tendency to expand reliance on desalination for drinking water uses, and the Tunisian side’s desire to expand the field of reusing agricultural wastewater, similar to what Egypt is currently doing. The Tunisian Minister invited his Egyptian counterpart to participate in the Mediterranean Forum, which is scheduled to be held in Tunisia in February 2024, in preparation for the Tenth World Water Forum, which is scheduled to be held in Indonesia in May 2024.
