Minister of Health and Population in Egypt Khaled Abdul Ghaffar has announced that meningitis has been brought under control thanks to a vaccination campaign involving travellers arriving from countries where the disease is prevalent, pilgrims and school students from kindergarten to secondary stage.
The minister made his remarks during a workshop organised by the Health Ministry on the occasion of the World Meningitis Day, celebrated on October 5 each year to raise awareness of the global and local impact of the meningitis which can kill life in less than 24 hours or cause a lifelong impairments.
The workshop aims to raise awareness about the disease , exchange knowledge, and review the latest world recommendations for examination, diagnosis, and treatment, Abdel Ghaffar said.
Abdel Ghaffar said his ministry is keen on developing the skills of medical professionals by holding sessions to inform them about the latest international preventive practices.
Abdel Ghaffar noted that Egypt is one of the first countries that has managed to control meningitis since 1989 and that it has designated 12 fever hospitals to monitor and detect the disease.
He further said that the infection rate of the disease in Egypt dropped in the year 2022 to 0.008 for each 100,000 people. The average infection rate of the disease at the global level is five case for each 100.000 people.
