The University of Tanta Thursday signed a co-operation agreement with the University of Djibouti.

President of Tanta University Mahmoud Zaki said the agreement is in accordance with instructions by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar to increase cooperation with higher education and scientific research institutions in other Arab and African countries.

The agreement would allow both universities to establish new colleges jointly in Djibouti and teaching staff from Tanta will be working there, Zaki added.

The new colleges would award bachelor’s and master’s degrees accredited by both universities, he said.

The agreement would also open the door to the establishment of special centres for the education of disabled persons at the University of Djibouti he added.

The University of Tanta will also set up a facility to teach women handicrafts at the University of Djibouti and an Arabic language department, he said.

The agreement would also permit post-graduates from the University of Djibouti to complete their studies at Tanta University, which, in turn, would offer scholarships to outstanding students in this regard, Zaki said.

According to the terms of the agreement, the two universities can cooperate in holding scientific conferences and seminars and formulate teacher training courses.

Zaki noted that the agreement symbolises Egypt’s return to Africa in a leading role in the continent.
