Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli Friday assessed the outcome of a campaign launched recently in Saft Turab Village, Gharbeya Governorate, by the Ministry of Environment.

The campaign comes within government efforts to involve locals in the development of their villages and environment.

According to a report by Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad, the scheme is to motivate younger villagers to become involved in the development of their villages in co-operation with the ministry.

The ministry is also stepping up its own efforts to improve the rural environment.

The services of civil society, the private sector, the media and Egyptians living abroad would be enlisted to turn sustainable development into reality, Fouad said.

Saft Turab, with its population of 100,000, was the first to be developed with other villages within a national rural development project, Fouad said in her report.

The village was to serve as a model and a template for development, she said, adding that her ministry had evaluated the problems and needs in the village in recent days.

Industrial effluent in the village canals and the accumulation of solid waste are two of the main problems for Saft Turab.

Refuse has piled up because some residents have failed to share in collection, Fouad wrote.

Around 2,700 tonnes of wastes were removed from the village thorough fares in the last few days, Fouad wrote in her report.

Village youths were also being trained in promoting social participation to solve environmental problems in their community
